Rights Respecting School

Mapledean Nursery School is a Rights Respecting School.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states the rights of all children and young people under the age of 18.

We are committed to the practice and principles as stated in the articles laid down by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child and these underpin the values and ethos of our Nursery. We aim to deliver an education which will form the first steps on a collective journey towards global sustainability.

We pledge to teach and inspire the children in our care to respect and love themselves, each other and the natural world. We would like these attitudes to impact on the local community, in which our children live and grow, consequently reaching into other communities and spreading the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to achieve a sustainable world.

We teach the children about their responsibilities and the need for respect. Our curriculum ensures that children reflect upon these attitudes promoting a strong sense of caring for each other, treating equipment responsibly and respecting their environment. We nurture every child’s sense of belonging and we foster every child’s freedom to think creatively.

We hope that each member of our school community experiences the warmth and acceptance which is the foundation of the values in our unique school.

Mapledean Nursery School has achieved the Rights Respecting Early Years Award and have learnt about human rights and respect in the community by  fully supporting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The nursery values a shared sense of the UN Articles with the children, parents, carers, staff and the wider community.

We support and promote the UNCRC by providing all our children with a safe, clean and attractive environment in which to play, learn and develop.  Our ethos has always been about respect and general kindness; it is expected that children will respect others as individuals and their beliefs. We believe there is a right and wrong way to behave and everyone at Mapledean has a responsibility to try and adhere to this.

We have developed children’s awareness of their rights as citizens and their responsibilities in respecting their environment and the people around them.  We are continuing to develop children’s awareness of empathy for all children in the world and in building foundations to become responsible global citizens.  We want it to be a learning journey for everyone, staff, children, parents and the wider community.  This ethos has become an integral part of our nursery curriculum and the staff, governors and parents are fully committed to the articles. Our aim is for our children to respect each other’s customs, cultures and beliefs.

All the Articles can be found in the UN Rights of the child Charter.
