Home Learning Matters

Home Learning Matters

We believe that education starts at home and that is why home learning really does matter. Parents have a vital role in guiding their child through the earliest stages of their learning and through their formative years. Early childhood experiences are the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives.

What children like to do at home helps to inform us about what activities to plan for at the Nursery and in the Children’s Centre. Please share your children’s interests and fascinations so we can plan to incorporate these into their nursery experiences.

In the nursery each child has a learning journey book which you are welcome to add to as a record of their Early Years experiences.

Here are some examples of home learning.

Shopping

  • This develops mathematical skills through counting, adding and taking away.
  • This develops language through talking, listening and following instructions.
  • This develops early reading by recognising symbols and that print has meaning.
  • This develops understanding the world through introducing food from around the world.

Bath time

  • Scientific discoveries
    • floating and sinking.
    • Dissolving (bath salts.)
    • Absorption of water (sponges and towels)
    • Where water comes from and where does it go?

Sharing books, having fun and making mistakes are 3 key ways for parents and children to learn together.Talk to staff in the Nursery and the Children’s Centre for some great ideas of things to do.
